Clean Water Project
Our first project is to address the terrible drinking water problem on the island. While the hotels, and many foreign-owned homes, have advanced water filtration systems, most Briland natives have to buy bottled water to avoid getting sick from the water supply on the island. The long-term goal of the project is to provide every native home on the island a water filtration system if they need it. To achieve this goal, The Daddy D Foundation has partnered with an American B-Corp called LifeStraw.
LifeStraw's mission is to provide everyone with equitable access to safe drinking water. In pursuit of this goal, they partner with local charities globally to provide school children with safe drinking water. This is their first partnership in The Bahamas. Usually, LifeStraw will donate a large water filtration system to a school that will purify the water for the children to drink while at school. We have persuaded them to go even further and work with us to provide every child and every native home on the island with a water filter.
This project is split into 3 phases.
First, Lifestraw is donating a large water filtration system (the LifeStraw Max) to the Harbour Island All-Age School and a smaller filter system (the LifeStraw Community) to the Harbour Island Green School.
Second, once we have reached our fundraising target of $25,000 we will be able to provide every school child on Harbour Island (approximately 500 children) with a water bottle that contains their LifeStraw's filter technology. These filters remove 99.999% of bacteria, parasites, microplastics, sand, dirt, and cloudiness. This means that every child will be able to fill up their water bottle from any faucet on the island and drink the water without getting sick. The funds raised will not only pay for the water bottles, but also for replacement filters and in-class presentations teaching the students the importance of safe, clean water, how their LifeStraw filters work, and how to maintain them. The Principals of both schools are very excited about this initiative.
Third, once we have raised an additional $40,000 we will be able to provide every family on the island with a LifeStraw home filter system to enable them to drink safe, clean water without having to buy bottled water. This should save each household at least $400' per year in bottled water costs, and significantly reduce plastic water bottle waste on the island.
